What is an Asset?

Assets are the bread and butter of investing. The basic building block that you will use to create a portfolio that represents your future wealth and peace of mind. In more technical terms – an asset is any resource with monetary value that you can own with the expectation that it will remain of value or increase in value in the future. There are many types of assets and most people are familiar with some of the most popular ones such as:

b. Real estate – Can grow in value in the right conditions, and

c. Vehicles – a vulnerable asset that can easily drop in value

The many types of assets are sorted into groups based on their similarities. These groups are known as Asset Classes. The investments in an asset class have similar characteristics to each other, are subject to the same rules and regulations, and mostly react the same way to market forces. The best known asset classes are stocks, bonds, and commodities.
